The Texas comptroller announced Oct. 30 that the state has begun modernizing its unclaimed-property program with new software and artificial intelligence in the claims process.
The agency says it wants to return money to owners faster, but its announcement does not give a timetable for those changes.

Comal County residents can search the state’s unclaimed-property database and file a claim if they find property that belongs to them. The comptroller says more than $12.5 billion is held statewide for rightful owners. That is the statewide pool, not an estimate of money owed to Comal County residents.
Unclaimed property can include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, utility deposits, insurance proceeds and payroll checks. Businesses and financial institutions turn over inactive property to the state after a period set by Texas law, according to the comptroller. Owners generally face no deadline to claim property the state holds.
