New Braunfels City Council is scheduled to consider a Sept. 28 agreement that would enroll six eligible retired first responders in city-paid critical-illness coverage estimated at $11,880 a year.
The city’s staff report says House Bill 4144 requires qualifying political subdivisions to provide a supplemental benefit or comparable health coverage when an eligible firefighter or peace officer develops a covered cancer, heart attack or stroke within three years after retiring. The proposed benefit would equal the lesser of the retiree’s final annual salary or $100,000.
Under the proposed Statement of Responsibility, New Braunfels would enroll every eligible member, pay the full premium during each three-year eligibility period and provide the information needed to administer coverage. MetLife would underwrite the policy, Amwins would administer it and the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool would hold the master policy.
