What do NBISD’s five campus repair estimates cost per listed seat?

NBISD’s five campuses each list 500 instructional seats, but their estimated building renewal costs range from about $1.6 million to $8.4 million. Families can compare the estimates now; a cost per usable seat needs a different capacity measure.

Same 500-seat denominator, very different repair math: NBISD’s five campuses range from about $3,194 to $16,795 in estimated 2026 building renewal needs per listed instructional seat. The district’s facility assessment supplies the repair estimates, while its planning document supplies the capacity figures.

The district’s planning document lists 500 instructional-capacity seats at each of the five schools, or 2,500 seats combined. That makes a straightforward comparison possible: divide each campus’s building renewal estimate by 500. It does not turn the result into a measure of seats usable for every program.

From the source record

Estimated building renewal needs divided by listed instructional capacity at five NBISD campuses. The assessment excludes soft costs and unvetted structural repairs; these are estimates, not funded commitments.

What the estimates cost per listed seat

The assessment lists 2026 building renewal needs of $4,386,449 at Carl Schurz, $8,397,560 at County Line, $1,596,779 at Memorial, $4,091,195 at Seele and $4,723,928 at Walnut Springs. Together, the five estimates total $23,195,911, or about $9,278 for each of their 2,500 listed instructional seats. These are rough-order building estimates, not a district commitment to spend that amount.

CampusEstimated building needsListed seatsEstimated cost per listed seat
Carl Schurz$4,386,449500$8,773
County Line$8,397,560500$16,795
Memorial$1,596,779500$3,194
Seele$4,091,195500$8,182
Walnut Springs$4,723,928500$9,448

Per-seat figures are rounded calculations using the district’s published instructional capacity. Estimated building needs exclude soft costs and unvetted structural repairs.

Look at County Line and Memorial. Both have the same listed denominator, but County Line’s estimated building needs are $6,800,781 higher. Families comparing the five campuses can see that County Line’s estimated renewal needs are more than five times Memorial’s on the district’s equal 500-seat capacity basis. The comparison describes the assessment’s building work; it does not account for the cost of moving students, changing programs or operating a different campus arrangement.

What the denominator can—and cannot—tell families

The district defines utilization as enrollment divided by instructional capacity. This calculation uses that published capacity measure. The unresolved question is how many seats at each campus would be usable for the programs and students involved in a particular consolidation plan. A program-adjusted capacity figure could change the per-seat comparison; the table should not be read as a verdict on which school to keep open.

The assessment also excludes soft costs and unvetted structural repairs from its rough-order building estimates. Those qualifications matter most when the numbers are used to compare options: a lower estimate on this table does not by itself establish a lower total cost for a future plan.

The next decision

NBISD says it has made no closure decision and is reviewing 11 scenarios. The district says its committee plans recommendations for Jan. 11, 2027, and the board plans action Jan. 19; the earliest contemplated consolidation would be in 2027–28. Families can inspect the district’s sustainability updates as those recommendations and any capacity or structural studies are posted.
