Adults who live or own property in New Braunfels or its extraterritorial jurisdiction, or have a USPS New Braunfels mailing address, can get a free New Braunfels Public Library card; other adults can buy a card for $25 a year or $15 for six months.

For eligible local adults, the card is free and renews every three years; adults outside the free-card criteria can choose a nonrefundable six-month or one-year membership. The distinction depends on the city's eligibility rules, which include some people who live outside city limits.

Check whether you qualify for a free card

The city's policy defines qualifying residency in three ways: living in New Braunfels or its extraterritorial jurisdiction, owning real property in either area, or having a New Braunfels, Texas, mailing address as established by the U.S. Postal Service. A mailing address and a city boundary are different tests under this policy. If your circumstances are unusual, bring your documents to a library service desk and ask staff how the city applies the rule.

Nonresident fees are nonrefundable. The policy separately describes a limited card for qualifying TexShare cardholders.

Bring identification and address documentation

The person getting the card generally must be present. The policy allows exceptions for people with accessibility barriers. A valid Texas photo ID showing your current address can verify both identity and residency. Alternatively, the policy accepts any photo ID bearing your name and photograph together with postmarked mail bearing your name. Take the documents to a branch so staff can check them against the eligibility rule.

The policy names property ownership as a route to a free card but does not specify which ownership document to present. If you qualify through property you own while your ID shows another address, ask the library service desk what proof it will accept before visiting.

Choose a paid card if you do not qualify

For adults 18 or older who do not meet the free-card criteria, the policy offers annual and six-month cards. Both fees are nonrefundable. The shorter choice costs less upfront but covers a shorter period; select the term that suits how long you expect to use the library.

There is a separate option for a nonresident who already holds a valid TexShare card from another participating library and is eligible under the city's TexShare rules. The city policy says that person may apply for a New Braunfels TexShare card at no additional charge. It limits borrowing to 10 items at a time and excludes interlibrary loan and patron request services; privileges last until the TexShare card expires. Ask staff about those limits before treating it as an alternative to a full paid membership.

Where to go

The city's facilities page lists the main library at 700 E. Common St., New Braunfels, TX 78130, and the Westside branch at 2910 I-35 Frontage Rd., New Braunfels, TX 78130. The main branch can be reached at 830-221-4300 and the Westside branch at 830-221-4301. Bring your identification and address documentation to a branch; the city's library card options page directs questions to the service desk at any branch. That page describes the newer card choices for minors, so adults should use the borrower eligibility policy for the rules in this guide.
