Schertz will begin measuring winter water use for sewer averaging on Nov. 1 for customers billed on the 10th and Nov. 15 for customers billed on the 25th.

The city's sewer-averaging notice gives each billing cycle its own end date, so customers should check when they receive their bill.

A customer's average water use during that period will determine the monthly sewer charge for 12 months beginning April 1. The city averages water-use readings from the applicable winter period, then applies its sewer rates to that monthly average. The notice does not compare an individual customer's coming charge with their current charge.

On the 25thNov. 15 through March 15

Dates are from the City of Schertz's Sept. 29 notice.

Monthly sewer-charge formula stated in the Schertz notice
Monthly averageCharge
Base$17.71
First 12,000 gallons$5.57 per 1,000 gallons
Above 12,000 gallons$13.37 per 1,000 gallons

Usage charges are added to the base charge; the higher tier applies only to usage above 12,000 gallons.

The city advises customers to check faucets, toilets, pipes and water meters for leaks and to avoid unnecessary winter watering. Lower winter use can reduce the average used in the formula, but whether a particular customer's sewer charge falls depends on their resulting average and current charge.

Before their averaging period begins, customers can use the city's published billing-cycle dates and rate formula to check which readings will matter. The notice directs billing questions to Schertz Utility Billing at (210) 619-1100.
