The proposal would raise the Police Department’s authorized civil-service strength from 171 to 174 positions, adding three police-officer slots, while leaving the Fire Department at 165. The proposed ordinance is scheduled for its first reading by the New Braunfels City Council on Sept. 28.

New Braunfels’ adopted fiscal 2027 budget assigns two of the new police positions to school resource work and one to a detective assignment. The city staff report explains that detective is an assignment rather than a separate rank, so that job appears in the ordinance as another police-officer position.

What the staffing table shows

The department’s existing table lists one assistant chief, three captains, six lieutenants, 19 sergeants, 21 corporals, 121 regular officers and an overhire maximum of 10 officers. The draft staffing table keeps every classification unchanged except regular police officers, which would increase to 124 effective Oct. 1.

For the Fire Department, the ordinance retains 165 authorized uniformed positions: two assistant chiefs, six battalion or division chiefs, nine captains, 20 lieutenants, 43 engineers and 85 firefighters. The item record says funding for all listed positions is incorporated into the adopted budget.

The staffing measure follows the council’s Sept. 14 budget and tax-rate action, covered in Comal.News’ New Braunfels meeting breakdown. That earlier action supplied the budget baseline; the new ordinance would formally set the number of civil-service positions by classification.

What happens next

The Sept. 28 agenda places the ordinance on consent for a first reading; the draft says it would take effect only after second and final reading, signatures and filing with the city secretary. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 550 Landa St.

Residents can inspect City Council file 26-1145 for the staff explanation and follow the meeting packet for the proposal’s place on the consent agenda. The next outcome to verify is whether council advances the ordinance on first reading and whether the staffing table changes before final action.
