Why does debt service take nearly 90% of WCID No. 6’s tax rate?

Property taxpayers inside WCID No. 6 now face an 85-cent rate, with 76 cents going to debt service. The district’s tax order shows how that debt levy is divided.

Debt service accounts for $0.76 of Comal County WCID No. 6’s adopted 2026 tax rate of $0.85 per $100 of taxable value, or 89.4% by Comal.News’ calculation.

The county’s 2026 tax-rate table gives the split, and the district’s levy order shows how the debt portion is assigned.

For an illustrative $300,000 taxable-value property inside WCID No. 6, the district levy would be $2,550, including $2,280 for debt service and $270 for operations. That calculation assumes the stated taxable value; it is an example of the district levy, not an individual property’s tax bill.

What it costs

The adopted 2026 rate includes $0.09 per $100 for maintenance and operations. The contrast is large: on the same taxable value, the debt component is more than eight times the operations component. Here are the county’s rates alongside the Comal.News illustration.

Where the debt levy goes

The September 24 levy order assigns $0.56 per $100 to water, sewer and drainage debt and $0.20 to road debt. Those two pieces add up to the county table’s 76-cent interest-and-sinking rate. The order directs the debt taxes to bond principal, interest and registrar fees.

For taxpayers, the 76-cent portion pays financing obligations, while the nine-cent portion is the operating levy. Paying for capital work over time spreads its cost across tax years; the rate shown here tells a property owner what the district is collecting for 2026, not the price or timetable of any individual project.

What to watch next

The next records to examine are the district’s debt schedule, financial statements and boundary map. They would let taxpayers connect the two debt categories to specific borrowing, repayment dates and the properties subject to the levy. The county’s tax-rate page is the public starting point for checking the adopted rate against a property’s own taxable value.

The district’s order says taxes under this levy become delinquent if they are not paid by January 31, 2027. Property owners can read the district’s order for the levy language and payment terms.
