TxDOT proposes expanding 6.7 miles of US 281 from East Borgfeld Drive to SH 46 from four divided lanes to a six-lane freeway.

TxDOT says the proposal could displace nine businesses, subject to final design. The agency’s US 281 South Comal hearing page provides the draft proposal and public participation details.

Proposed footprint

The proposal calls for about 104.5 acres of new right of way and 2.9 acres of permanent easements. TxDOT identifies a proposed 1.99-acre right-of-way taking from the 39.4-acre Uecker-Hitzfelder Ranch field and pasture; its description leaves the building and cemetery zones intact. The project lies within Edwards Aquifer recharge and contributing zones and a floodplain, according to TxDOT. These are draft impacts for residents and property owners to inspect, rather than completed acquisitions or a final design.
