Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to create a working group for three-year bachelor’s pathways and submit recommendations by Dec. 31, 2026.
New Braunfels’ local stake is Northeast Lakeview College’s expanding campus, which the city said grew from 125 students in 10 courses at its fall 2023 opening to 400 students in 25 courses by August 2025.
The state assignment asks the group to recommend academic standards, identify degree programs and high-demand occupations suited to acceleration, assess student and employer demand, map accreditation and institutional approvals, and identify legal or administrative changes needed for implementation. Abbott’s office listed public colleges, employers, accrediting organizations and faculty leadership among the participants.
For students weighing a bachelor’s degree, the administration’s stated goal is fewer added semesters of tuition, fees and living expenses and an earlier start in a high-demand field. The working group’s standards will determine how that idea translates into an academic program colleges can seek approval to offer.
