Texas Comptroller Don Huffines says his office will review spending at up to four school districts, name them in the coming weeks and deliver a final report by Dec. 31, 2026.
For families served by Comal ISD and New Braunfels ISD, the next locally consequential record is the selection announcement; it will show whether either district is among the up to four chosen for review.
The comptroller says the review will cover districts of varying sizes and geographic locations, excluding districts led by state-appointed boards. Its stated test is whether public money was used lawfully and for its intended purposes.
Gov. Greg Abbott requested the reviews and asked that the findings reach lawmakers in time for the 90th Legislature to consider possible changes. His request focused on classroom spending, administrative growth and compliance with state law.
Selection is the first meaningful checkpoint for local taxpayers: a named district would face scrutiny of how it spent public funds, while the December report could produce recommendations for the Legislature. Until the list is released, the announcement establishes a statewide review process rather than a finding about either local district.
The comptroller’s next posting should answer two questions the launch announcement leaves for residents: which districts were chosen and what selection standard was used. The final report is due before the calendar turns to 2027.
