Council unanimously approved lowering the speed limit in the residential areas of Lake Front Avenue to 25 miles per hour. The action was the ordinance’s first of two required readings.
Drivers on 14 Lake Front-area street segments would face a 25-mph limit instead of 30 mph after the ordinance clears its required second reading. The revised ordinance names Lake Front Avenue and 13 connected streets, from Dunlap Drive and Misty Acres Drive to Rivertree Drive, River Bank and Rio Verde.
What the traffic study found
The affected residential streets are generally posted at 30 mph, while the city study found four reported crashes from July 2023 through July 2026, including two listed as speed-related. That record supplied the baseline for the council action, following two earlier Comal.News reports on the proposed change.
The study measured 85th-percentile speeds of 29 mph on two Lake Front Avenue segments and 31 mph on Misty Acres Drive. Rivertree Drive registered 22 mph after speed humps were installed there in summer 2026.
Those measurements matter because the same study says a lower posted limit alone did not reduce speeds in an earlier Mission Drive pilot. It reports that Rivertree’s speed humps cut the 85th-percentile speed by 6 mph, and it calls for engineering, education and enforcement to accompany the sign change.
A resident asked for enforcement
A neighborhood resident described increased cut-through traffic and safety concerns for children and supported lowering the speed limit with police enforcement. The verified meeting record establishes what the resident told council, not whether each underlying assertion is independently proven.
The Transportation and Traffic Advisory Board recommended approval 5-1 on Sept. 10. City staff estimated each traffic sign at about $150 and said the approved fiscal 2027 streets and drainage budget has enough funding for the installation.
What happens next
The city’s traffic study calls for collecting new traffic data after implementation and recommends evaluating further traffic calming on Lake Front Avenue and Misty Acres Drive.
