A New Braunfels plan proposes $450,000 for downtown trees, seating and lighting. The proposal would add 18 trees and five benches, with the Downtown TIRZ board scheduled to take it up Oct. 26.

Residents and visitors would see proposed changes near the Annex on East San Antonio Street, New Braunfels Title on South Seguin Avenue, and Hill and West San Antonio streets. The plan identifies a raised, lighted seat wall near the Annex; new trees and curb work near New Braunfels Title; and a drain grate at Hill and West San Antonio.

From the source record

Funding sources listed in the downtown tree improvement plan. The four listed amounts total the proposed $450,000 project estimate.

What the money would buy

The plan counts 37 existing downtown trees and proposes 18 more. It also describes five benches and 40 uplight locations. The estimate allocates $365,000 to construction and $85,000 to design. The plan calls for manual watering while the trees become established rather than an irrigation system.

The proposed funding combines $118,508 in tree-preservation funds, which the plan identifies as confirmed, with three potential contributions: $100,000 in parking revenue, $65,000 from TIRZ 3 and $166,492 from the New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation. Those proposed contributions should not be read as final commitments.

Decisions still ahead

The Downtown TIRZ board is scheduled to meet Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. in the City Hall Tejas Room. The project material presents the improvements and financing as a proposal. A TIRZ recommendation would require later City Council approval.

The proposed schedule places a design notice in February 2027, plans in April and June, bidding from July through September, and construction beginning in October 2027. Readers can inspect the proposed sites, amenities and funding in the downtown tree improvement plan; the Oct. 26 board record is the next place to check for an action and any changes to the proposal.
