Police and firefighter applicants in New Braunfels could face revised screening standards under rule amendments scheduled for an Oct. 6 commission decision.
New Braunfels' Civil Service Commission is scheduled to consider changes to entry-level police psychological exams and firefighter drug-use disqualifications on Oct. 6.
If approved, the proposed language would change screening rules for people seeking New Braunfels police and fire jobs. The police draft would require a new L3 psychological exam if more than 180 days have passed since an applicant's last appointment with a Texas law enforcement agency or graduation from a basic licensing course; out-of-state applicants would need a new exam regardless of the break.
The firefighter draft would set a ten-year disqualification for voluntary use of illegal drugs other than marijuana, while directing reviewers to consider marijuana use case by case. Its tracked changes also address prescription-drug misuse and other drug-related criteria. These are proposed eligibility rules, not findings about any applicant.
The commission's posted agenda also calls for approval of its Sept. 1 minutes and provides time for residents to address matters outside the agenda. The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the City Hall Council Chambers, 550 Landa St. The agenda asks attendees who need auxiliary aids to contact the City Secretary's Office at least two workdays ahead.
The next test is the commission's action on the two amendments. Readers can inspect the proposed wording in the agenda packet and compare it with the final minutes or updated rules after the meeting; approval, rejection or edits would determine what actually changes.
