NBISD to discuss $1.8 million school officer proposal

A proposed agreement would set how New Braunfels provides school resource officers and how NBISD pays for them. The district lists $1.8 million in recurring general-fund spending; trustees are scheduled to discuss the proposal Oct. 19.

New Braunfels ISD trustees are scheduled to discuss a proposed school resource officer agreement with the City of New Braunfels on Oct. 19.

The board letter lists $1.8 million as a recurring general-fund expenditure for the proposed arrangement. That figure describes the district’s budgeted spending, not a newly approved payment. The agreement would define city-provided officer service and the district’s share of its costs.

How the proposed arrangement would work

The proposed agreement would have the district reimburse 75% of the officers’ direct costs and all school resource officer overtime. It calls for the city to employ the officers and send the district detailed quarterly invoices. Those terms matter to students who receive the service and to taxpayers who fund it: the agreement assigns the recurring expense to the district while the officers remain city employees. Readers can inspect the reimbursement provisions in the proposed interlocal agreement.

The unsigned draft states a term from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Its signature lines are blank. Those dates describe the proposed contract period; the document alone does not establish that either party has executed it. The Oct. 19 discussion is therefore a chance to examine the planned service and payment formula, rather than a documented final agreement.

What happens next

The board letter says no action is required on the proposed agreement at the Oct. 19 meeting. The posted agenda schedules the regular meeting for 6 p.m. and lists the officer agreement for discussion as item 9.D. A later board or city action record, followed by an executed agreement, would establish whether the proposal became binding and whether its terms changed. The posted agenda is the route to verify the discussion item and meeting details.
