New Braunfels ISD trustees are scheduled to consider submitting class-size exception requests for three elementary grade groups on Oct. 19.

The proposed submission covers second and fourth grade at Veramendi Elementary and fourth grade at Lamar Elementary, according to the board letter accompanying the meeting agenda.

The district lists enrollment above its 88-seat allocation in Veramendi second grade, Veramendi fourth grade and Lamar fourth grade. For families in those grade groups, the proposal concerns how the district handles enrollment beyond the seats it allotted across four teachers in each group.

Where enrollment exceeds the allocation

The district’s board letter says Texas Education Code §25.112 sets a 22-student class-size limit for prekindergarten through fourth grade. Its request identifies four teachers and 88 allotted seats in each of the three grade groups. The district lists 90 second-graders at Veramendi and 94 fourth-graders at each of Veramendi and Lamar, with 88 allotted seats for each group.

Student and seat figures are from the district’s board letter and Oct. 5 enrollment report; differences are arithmetic.

At 90 students, Veramendi second grade is two above its 88-seat allocation; each fourth-grade group, with 94 students, is six above its allocation. Those are comparisons of grade-group totals with allotted seats. The proposal before trustees is to submit class-size exception requests for those groups.

What happens next

The agenda places the class-size waiver submission on the Oct. 19 consent agenda. The board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 19. Readers can inspect the agenda’s class-size waiver entry and then check the board’s action record after the meeting to see whether trustees authorized submission.
