At its Sept. 24 meeting, Comal County ESD 7 reported that final inspection of its district-funded fire engine had flagged about 35 corrections and projected roughly two more months before it entered service.

The engine was not expected in service for about two months while equipment was mounted. That was the estimate recorded in minutes posted Oct. 22, rather than a confirmed date when residents could expect the truck to respond to calls.

Inspection and equipment

The fire chief's report identified paint and graphics, front-cab grab rails and a bumper blind-spot mirror among the correction items. It described a truck with a 750-gallon water tank and expected the vehicle to reach New Braunfels the following week. Arrival and readiness were separate steps: equipment still had to be mounted before the engine could enter service.

The treasurer's report listed the fully equipped engine as a $1.3 million obligation pending payment. The report anticipated separate invoices for the truck, upfitting, loose equipment and a mobile data terminal, with the project remaining under its not-to-exceed amount. It also said self-contained breathing apparatus purchased by the city could be transferred as needed.

Calls and board business

ESD 7 accounted for 12.08% of the New Braunfels Fire Department's 1,391 combined calls in August, according to the report presented to the board. That share describes the district's call activity in that month; the minutes do not measure how the additional engine would change response times.

Commissioners approved the treasurer's report and payment of bills, 4-0. The engine appears in the financial report as an obligated, pending expense; the recorded approval should not be read as a separate engine purchase vote.

Citizen comments

The Sept. 24 minutes record that no citizen comments were offered. They do not attribute any resident testimony about the engine or its projected service date.

What happens next

The district still needed the vehicle identification and ownership packet before adding the engine as Exhibit 3 to its interlocal agreement and taking it to City Council for insurance and registration. The next records to check are that exhibit and council action, the inspection corrections, final invoices and a documented in-service date. Readers can inspect the district's Sept. 24 minutes for the board's account of the engine's status and costs.
